Changing the Course of Alzheimer’s: Treatments on the Horizon
Welcome to another episode of #ExpertTalk by EverythingALZ. In this session, we are joined by Dr. Lon S. Schneider, MD, MS, Della Martin Professor in Psychiatry and Neuroscience and Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Gerontology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, for an engaging discussion on the future of Alzheimer’s disease treatment, drug development, and the evolving challenges of diagnosis. Dr. Schneider explores recent developments in Alzheimer’s drug development, including emerging approaches targeting tau and inflammation, advances in delivering treatments into the brain, and the current role of anti-amyloid therapies. He discusses why some treatments can produce substantial changes in biomarkers without necessarily producing the same level of clinical benefit, and why researchers are looking toward different and potentially better therapeutic targets. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Schneider highlights the complexity and heterogeneity of Alzheimer’s disease and the challenges of diagnosing the disease using increasingly available tools. He discusses amyloid and tau imaging, blood-based biomarkers, the concept of biological Alzheimer’s disease, and why interpreting these diagnostic tools requires careful consideration. He also discusses the role of risk factors and environmental and behavioral changes in dementia, as well as the challenges involved in conducting Alzheimer’s clinical trials. In this talk, we cover: - The future of Alzheimer’s disease drug development - Recent developments in anti-amyloid and anti-tau treatments - Advances in delivering treatments across the blood-brain barrier - Why changes in biomarkers may not always translate into clinical outcomes - The shift toward different therapeutic targets in Alzheimer’s research - Understanding Alzheimer’s disease as a heterogeneous condition - The growing role of blood-based biomarkers in diagnosis - Amyloid and tau imaging and other tools used to assess Alzheimer’s pathology - The challenges of diagnosing biological Alzheimer’s disease - The role of environmental and behavioral factors in dementia risk - Challenges in Alzheimer’s clinical trial recruitment and study design - The importance of continued research to identify better treatments and therapeutic targets 📲 Download the EverythingALS App Google Play: http://bit.ly/4nXqIYy App Store: https://bit.ly/42tPBmh Follow EverythingALZ: ► Website: https://www.everythingalz.org/ ► X: https://x.com/EverythingALZ ► LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/everythingalz/ ► Subscribe for more Expert Talks: https://www.youtube.com/@UCZbd6RDJspvl7iJ_ifnCWBQ #ExpertTalk #EverythingALZ #AlzheimersDisease #AlzheimersResearch #AlzheimersTreatment #Dementia #DementiaResearch #BrainHealth #ClinicalTrials #Biomarkers #Neuroscience #LonSchneider
